Many kamon share the same base motif but differ in arrangement, line thickness, enclosures (circles), and small details. This is why you may find multiple versions attributed to the same clan or region.

Tip: When comparing crests, focus on (1) motif, (2) enclosure (circle/none), (3) number of elements, and (4) orientation.

Japanese Kamon – Traditional Family Crests of Japan

Kamon are traditional Japanese family crests used to represent families and samurai clans. Today, more than 40,000 kamon designs are known in Japan., making them one of the largest heraldic traditions in the world.

The origin of kamon dates back to the Heian period (794–1185), when aristocratic families began using simple symbols on their ox carts to distinguish their vehicles during court ceremonies. These emblems gradually became associated with noble families.

Later, during the rise of the samurai class and the Genpei War (1180–1185), warrior clans began using kamon on banners, armor, and equipment to identify allies on the battlefield. From that time onward, kamon became an important symbol of family identity and heritage.

Today forty thousands of kamon designs are still recognized in Japan. Many are based on plants, animals, natural forms, or geometric patterns. Many kamon are still used today in traditional ceremonies, family graves, and cultural events.
